Echoes of Autumn, Shades of Ink
“Calligraphy is silent music, and the Qin is calligraphy with sound!” Guqin master Mr. Jung Ping Yuan believes that when a calligrapher has undergone training in Qin art, their calligraphy naturally gains greater musicality and rhythm. Likewise, a Qin player benefits from a foundation in calligraphy—understanding the structure of characters, the turning of strokes, and the modulation of speed, rhythm, and timing. In his words: “To play Qin is to write; to write is to play Qin. Both are arts of time and space.” This year’s exhibition coincides with the refreshing autumn season and, in collaboration with the Chinese Guqin Society, will feature weekly Qin gatherings every Saturday during the exhibition period, showcasing the harmony of calligraphy and Qin. The works presented are based on stele studies and original creations taught by Mr. Jung Ping Yuan, contributed by students of Xi Xuan Calligraphy Class from Taiwan and abroad. The exhibition includes works in seal, clerical, regular, running, and cursive scripts. Through seeking inspiration from tradition while pursuing innovation, these works embody the transmission of Xi Xuan’s calligraphy lineage and reveal the enduring beauty of Chinese calligraphy. The exhibited works were created by Mr. Jung Ping Yuan’s students, who have studied various classical scripts under his guidance. The contributors, listed in order of the strokes in their names, include Mi Kanghua (Denis Semirukhin), Wang Shenglu, Yuan Anrui (Andrey Danilov), Chen Yunru, Chen Liru, Chen Lizhu, Mo Shi (Olga Obukhova), Zhang Yiting, Zhang Peiyou, Peng Liwen, Huang Lina, Yang Sufang, Ye Yunzhen, Ning Jian, Liu Hongzhi, Jian Lilian and Lanzi. The exhibition showcases a variety of script styles, including seal, clerical, regular, running, and cursive scripts. These works reflect the lineage of this calligraphy school and exhibit the beauty of traditional Chinese calligraphy as they draw from the past and strive for innovation. |
